Anne woke to the sound of keys rustling and clumsy footsteps. She reached for her specs and phone. It is rather late, 11:39pm displayed in blue tint. She carelessly stumbled out of bed to ensure it was them and to access their drunkenness. Erin is fumbling a glass before the running tap.
“How was your evening?”
“We ran into some friends we haven’t seen for awhile and lost track of the time.”
“Ah.”
“Need to wash this face and sleep, ” Erin muttered as she disappeared down the dark hall.
Eli followed hesitantly, yet it was too late and his body ached from a long work week. Anne headed to bed as midnight was fast approaching. She avoided the discomfort of knowing the full details of the evening. Anne tucked herself in wrapping herself like a burrito. She conserved movements to retain her body heat. The room was cold, the air stale and tense. Anne could not sleep. Her mind raced, assumptions and suspicion consumed her. Anne punched the pillow and cried herself to sleep.
